Moonfleet originally dates from around 1800 coming at the end of a period of gentrification in the area when several other prestigious properties were built, such as Ven House in the village, now the home of the fashion designer Jasper Conran, and Sherborne House in the nearby town. Moonfleet has been through two historic phases of extension and change, the first in around 1900 when an extensive south-eastern wing was constructed and later in the 1960s when substantial improvement was made to the back of the house.
It was in the 1950s that the house acquired the name Moonfleet; previously the house was know as Sunnyside but the resonant and romantic name Moonfleet was adopted by Dr Tuke the nephew of the prominent Victorian Royal Academician Henry Scott-Tuke. For many years the house was known locally as Dr Tuke’s. He held his surgery in the garden room believing in the power of plentiful sunlight and fresh air. Dr Tuke advocated the harmonious integration of indoor and outdoor space and appreciated the unusual orientation of the house providing excellent opportunities to enjoy different aspects of the sunshine from the various rooms at different times of day. Today Moonfleet provides supremely elegant and versatile accommodation. The rooms are generously spacious. There is potential to create a further suite of attic bedrooms or to reorganise the interior spaces to suit any requirements. Presently a part of the house, with independent access to the courtyard, provides a self-contained 'granny flat' with a separate kitchen and bathroom. The building is disposed around three characterful gardens and patio areas. There are a number of outbuildings including a double garage. Opportunities Moonfleet is currently a family home. There is the capacity, with some internal reorganisation for upto 20 bedrooms with the existing very spacious communal rooms, manageable grounds and ample parking. The amenities in the village include a laundry, a thriving medical practice and a friendly newsagent.
